NWT Badminton Team at the 2004 Arctic Winter Games! After 6 six hard days of competition at the Arctic Winter Games everyone on the NWT Badminton team received Ulus.
Badminton is a very demanding sport that tests both individual and team skills, stamina and strategy in singles, doubles and mixed doubles competition. The Badminton venue takes the whole week to determine the medal winners. The categories are: Juvenile female (2), juvenile male (2), junior female (2) and junior male (2). Each athlete plays singles doubles and mixed doubles events. In the first four days of competition each athlete is required to play 15 matches, the best of three games determines who wins the match. This means that each player has to play at least 30 games against the other contingents from Alaska, Alberta North, Greenland, Nunavut and the Yukon. Only the top four in each event qualify to make the semi-final and final matches that take place in the last two days. In singles play, 12 players in each category are competing for three medals.
In the qualifying rounds Jennifer Waugh in juvenile ladies singles, Jennifer Waugh and Eric Aitkens in juvenile mixed doubles, and Eric Aitken in juvenile men’s singles went undefeated. Everyone qualified for the semifinals and five made it to the finals. For six days in a row the badminton squad were at the courts all day and the finals were played on the sixth day. This was a great year every for Team NWT in badminton taking medals in 8 events. Following are the results:
Congratulations to the athletes for all their hard work and dedication!
