Sport North

Rob Meckling made a presentation touching upon the Sport and Recreation Council and the Sport and Recreation Committee. Sport North is in the final phase of purchasing the Cooper Building.  Sport North is looking at doing some standardized testing on athletes in a year or two.  More detailed information on the information is attached.

2006 Arctic Winter Games

The upcoming AWG are being held in Kenai Peninsula, Alaska on March 5 – 11, 2006.

On May 26, 2005 Sport North and the Regional Coordinator met to discuss the process, roles and responsibilities and other related business regarding the games. The following points were addressed during the meeting and endorsed by the membership at the Sport North AGM:

- All athletes, coaches, chaperones and mission staff MUST possess a valid passport by January 6, 2006. This is a mandatory requirement to attend the games and is at the cost of the individual.

- All coaches must be trained in CBET part A or have the old equivalent NCCP Level 1 in order to coach in the 2006 AWG.

- All athletes will be limited to three sporting events at the Regional Trials and one sporting event at the Territorial Trials. All athletes must be in attendance and participating at both events.

- Regional Trials must be completed by December 19, 2005.

- Territorial Trials are scheduled for January 11 – 14, 2006.

- A summary for the AWG operations manual will be available at: www.sportnorth.com.

-     The Territorial Sport Organization (TSO) is responsible for developing minimum age requirements for their sport to reflect liabilities and safety issues in each sport. Athletes must be within three years of the age requirement where no age limit exists. A TSO may submit a request to the Games Committee for specific age considerations relevant to its sport.

There was discussion around the table on the above issue. Kelly suggest that the age groups stay in their own and not allowing the younger players to take the place of the older one, therefore the games being more participatory and giving the rest of the NWT a chance to be represented. Not just all the very good players.

Others feel that if the player is good enough they should be allowed to play in any division above their age category.

A motion was put forward by Ron:

“After much discussion and agreement the NWT Badminton hereby resolves that they do not wish to see a minimum age requirement established in the AWG and that this be communicated to the Games Committee and Sport North by the President in writing.”

MOVED by Kevin. SECONDED by Vanessa. Kelly abstained. CARRIED.

Treasurer’s Report

An electronic report was received by Jim from Theresa Fehrman. See attached report.

Kelly raised an issued about travel costs to tournaments. Jim said to apply to the NWTBA to see if it has available funding. The NWTBA has not covered travel to all tournaments but has helped when the players are going to a southern tournament. It has also helped out in terms of assisting with shuttles and equipment when needed.

Vice-President Coaching Development Report

Tausia Lal sent her report with Vanessa, but unfortunately she forgot it,    she will ask Tausia to email Jim a copy to include in the AGM.

Vice-President Officials Development Report

     Ron Graf reported.

Jim Umpherson and Martin Deschesnes were trained last year. Alex from Hay River participated but didn’t write the exam.

JJ Hurst in Hay River wants to train this year.

Rons’ goal is to get someone trained at the national level.

The Canadian Badminton Association is trying a new scoring system, a rally scoring game to 21 points. The back doubles service line is eliminated to encourage more long serves and to speed the game up.

Vice-President Player Development Report

Martin Deschesnes to report but absent at this time.

Vice-President Competition Report

See attached report. Tournaments: Grand Prairie, Hay River High School Championships, NWT Jr. and Senior Championships in Yellowknife, Peggy Curtis Open in Inuvik, YK middle school Championships, and the Stettler in Alberta.

The Yukon wants to host a North of Sixty Tournament. No dates yet.

Grand Prairie Tournament is November 4-5, 2006.

Sport Development Officer Report

See attached report by Cathy.

The Inuvik Tour was successful by doing clinics for 200 people, youth and adults attended. Finished the tour with the Peggy Curtis Open Tournament.

Currently working on a project for the schools. The NWTBA is giving the elementary schools racquets, shuttles, replacement grips, a repair kit, a DVD instructional guide and a manual with lesson plans. The High Schools will get everything except the racquets. The purpose of this project is to put quality equipment and resources in the schools. In return we hope to do clinics, increase the number of people playing badminton, streamline players and coaches to achieve higher levels.

A budget of $16,000.00 is in place for the school project. Shipping costs are yet to be determined as the equipment is still arriving. We hope to have the schools equipped by mid October.

Summer Camps/ Player Development clinics were done in Deline, WhaTi, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik and Norman Wells.

We hope to develop a badminton circuit to encourage players to develop all season long.

Selection of coaches for AWG, CWG and the WCSG.

Jim reported. Only one application was received for the coach of AWG/ 2006 team- Laurell Graf. Only one application was received for the managers’ position of the AWG – Jim Umpherson.

The NWTBA endorses the applications of the above as coach and manager of the AWG 2006 .

No other application were received for the other Games Positions. Laurell is the only one qualified. Kevin is waiting to hear from Rob Meckling at Sport North concerning his qualifications.

Online accountabilities and 2005/2006 Workplan

Jim explained the process Sport North has set up for the TSO to do their accountabilities online. Once a tournament is complete, input all the data and its done instead of waiting until the end of the year to gather everything.

Workplan – for new executive to tackle.

Goals and recommendations for next year:

            Hay River coaching clinic.

Player development clinics in Fort Providence, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson and Yellowknife.

New Business

AGM attendance – Ron suggest having AGM attached to the NWT Championships. Call it a “Special AGM”. There was discussion about bringing an extra person to attend the meeting while the chaperones looked after the youth who were brought to the tournament. The NWTBA is paying for travel to the championship so to pay for an extra person shouldn’t be a problem. The end of our season would be a better time to discuss issues as oppose to the beginning.

School Championships – Kelly talked about the Elks in Hay River possibly sponsoring the High School Championships, which are held there each year. She says she still has to talk to the School Education District to see if it is ok the have the Elks name attached to the school championship.

Teachers in Yellowknife suggest having banners for prizes instead of a trophy. A banner becomes a permanent fixture.

Adjournment

MOVED by Ron to adjourn the meeting. CARRIED
